What’s next for housing…

There’s no easy fix when it comes to tackling the housing crisis.

Opening Doors – part of the council’s Accelerating Homebuilding programme – is helping to build solutions brick by brick in our part of Dorset.

There have been several milestones so far – not least our new Homes Dorset local housing company to take the initiative and progress schemes on our doorstep.

Our latest graphic shows some of the successes so far and the path ahead as we look forward.

It is still early days but we are ambitious for the future, ultimately to hit our target of encouraging 20,000 more homes of all types by 2033.

Some of the steps forward include using Homes Dorset to its full potential, further relationship building with developers and housebuilders, supporting more community land trusts and more mythbusting to explain the need for more housing.

Opening Doors wants to see good quality housing in the right areas to help more people into a home of their own – especially those young local workers who might otherwise be priced out of the housing market.

More decent homes of all types – for rent, open market purchase, affordable rent or buy, self-build or in community land trusts – in developments of different sizes are vital for the future of our towns and villages.

Ultimately housing plays a vital role in creating and fostering vibrant and vital communities.

Accelerating Homebuilding and Opening Doors have set the wheels in motion for more much-needed housing that our part of Dorset requires now and in the future.
