Dawn of new era in Dorset
Congratulations to the new Dorset Council on its official launch today.
It replaces the district and borough councils in East Dorset, North Dorset, Purbeck, West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland plus Dorset County Council, all of which no longer exist.
The new local authority comes into being under re-organisation of local government. In the east of the county, a new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has been formed.
The new council delivers local services, and also works with town and parish councils. Town councils remain in operation, such as Dorchester Town Council and Bridport Town Council. A new town council has also been launched for Weymouth.
The vast majority of services will be unaffected, including housing services previously operated by district and borough councils.
There are a series of commonly asked questions on the new council’s website which may help answer any queries you may have, whether they are about housing, elections or future services.
Opening Doors will continue to campaign for more good quality housing of the right kind in the right areas. Don’t forget to sign our Home Ownership Register to receive all of the latest updates if you are seeking to buy or rent a new home.
